ASTM B75 C12200 Cold Drawn Seamless Copper Alloy Tube for Steam Tracing Applications 0

ASTM B75 C12200 Copper Alloy Tube High-Quality Copper Alloy Tubes For Steam Tracing

Material Description

ASTM B75 C12200 copper alloy tube is a seamless, cold-drawn phosphorus-deoxidized copper (Cu-DHP) tube designed for general engineering service and particularly well suited for steam tracing and low- to medium-temperature steam lines.

The alloy (UNS C12200 / Cu-DHP) combines:

  • Very high copper purity (≥99.9% Cu including Ag) with 0.015–0.040% phosphorus as a deoxidizer, ensuring resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and good weldability.

  • Excellent thermal conductivity and good corrosion resistance in typical steam and condensate environments.

This makes it a robust and economical choice for steam tracing of process pipelines, valves, instruments and ancillary equipment.

Specifications

Grade & Standard

  • Material: Phosphorus-deoxidized copper, high residual P (Cu-DHP)

  • UNS: C12200

  • Product form: Seamless copper tube

Manufacturing Process

  • Seamless, hot-worked and cold-drawn tube

    • Fully annealed (soft coils / straight lengths)

    • Light-drawn or hard-drawn on request

Typical Dimensions for Steam Tracing
(Design-dependent; below are common tracer sizes)

  • Outside diameter (OD): 3/8" (9.52 mm), 1/2" (12.7 mm) commonly used; 1/4"–7/8" OD available

  • Wall thickness: Typically 0.9–1.2 mm for 3/8"–1/2" OD tracing tubes

    • Level-wound coils: up to 50–150 m per coil (typical)

    • Straight lengths: 3–6 m standard; custom on request

Delivery Condition & Finish

  • Temper: O60 (soft annealed) is preferred for steam tracing due to easy bending; hard tempers (H55/H80 etc.) available where higher strength is required

  • Ends: Plain ends, deburred; other end preparation upon request

  • Surface: Clean, bright or light oxide, internal cleanliness controlled for steam and condensate service

Main Features

  1. Optimized for Steam Tracing Temperatures

    • C12200 copper tube under ASTM B75 is widely used in fluid and steam lines and retains strength at elevated temperatures typical of low- and medium-pressure steam service.

  2. Excellent Thermal Conductivity

    • High thermal conductivity (around 196 W/m·K) enables efficient heat transfer from steam to the traced line, reducing the number of tracers and steam consumption.

  3. Resistance to Hydrogen Embrittlement

    • Phosphorus deoxidation minimizes dissolved oxygen and prevents “steam embrittlement” (hydrogen disease), a key requirement for copper in hot, moist service.

  4. Strong Corrosion Resistance in Steam/Condensate

    • C12200 and related Cu-DHP alloys exhibit very good resistance to general corrosion and pitting in water, steam and many industrial atmospheres, supporting long service life in steam lines and tracers.

  5. Easy Bending, Forming and Joining

    • Excellent cold-workability and brazing/soldering characteristics allow tight-radius bends, coiling around process pipe, and reliable joints (brazed, soldered, compression fittings).

  6. Proven Standardized Quality

    • ASTM B75 specifies mechanical tests, hydrogen embrittlement testing, expansion tests and non-destructive (eddy-current / pressure) tests for copper tubes, ensuring consistent, traceable quality.

  7. Cost-Effective vs Stainless for Moderate Conditions

    • For many designs, copper tracer tube is recommended for steam service up to about 400°F (204°C) where compatible with the medium, offering lower material and installation cost than stainless steel.

Our Advantages

Based on common questions from engineers and buyers of steam tracing tubing, here is how this product and our supply approach address key concerns:

1. “Is copper really suitable for my steam tracing temperature and pressure?”

  • Engineering guidelines indicate copper tubing is suitable when saturated steam temperature does not exceed about 400°F (204°C) and when the process or environment is not aggressively corrosive.

  • Our C12200 tubes are supplied in wall thicknesses selected according to your design pressure and applicable piping codes; heavier walls can be provided for more severe thermal cycling as recommended by steam tracing best-practice documents.

What we offer

  • Application review (steam pressure, temperature, medium, environment) and guidance on when C12200 copper is ideal and when 316L stainless tracer tube is a better choice.

  • Wall-thickness selection and documentation to align with your internal standards and project specifications.

2. “What about corrosion and condensate cleanliness?”

Design guides point out that copper is economical but corrosion products can contaminate traps and instruments if water chemistry is poor.

Our approach

  • We supply C12200 from controlled-chemistry Cu-DHP melts with very low impurity levels and proven service in steam, water, and heat-exchange systems.

  • On request, we can provide:

    • Pre-cleaned / internally cleaned tubes for critical steam/condensate systems

    • Guidance on compatibility with your condensate treatment program

    • Alternative 316L tracer solutions for highly corrosive or contaminated services

3. “How do I know the tubing meets ASTM B75 and project QA requirements?”

ASTM B75/B75M defines strict requirements for chemistry, mechanical properties, expansion tests, hydrogen embrittlement tests, and non-destructive testing of seamless copper tubes.

What we provide

  • Material test reports (EN 10204 3.1) including:

    • Chemical analysis (Cu, P and residuals)

    • Tensile test results and hardness

    • Expansion / flattening tests as required

    • Eddy-current or hydrostatic / pneumatic tests where specified

  • Full traceability by heat, coil and bundle, plus packaging and marking aligned with ASTM / customer specifications.

4. “Can I get tracer tube in long coils and with reliable bending performance?”

Steam tracing design guidelines emphasize the use of 3/8" and 1/2" OD copper or stainless tube in long continuous runs for efficient installation.

Our advantages here

  • Soft-annealed C12200 coils with excellent ductility (typical O60 tensile 220–260 MPa with ≥40% elongation) allow tight wraps around process lines without wrinkling.

  • Level-wound coils minimize joints and leak points, reducing installation time and maintenance risk.

5. “What if I need equivalent grades for multi-standard projects?”

Global projects often mix ASTM, EN, JIS, GB and GOST documentation. Cu-DHP / C12200 has well-established cross-references to CW024A, C1220 and TP2 and to Russian M1F-type coppers.

We support

  • Cross-standard mapping (ASTM ↔ EN ↔ JIS ↔ GB ↔ GOST) in datasheets and certificates

  • Mixed-standard marking if your documentation requires both UNS and local designations
