Honed Tube vs. Skived & Roller Burnished Tube: Which Is Better for Your Hydraulic Cylinder?

When selecting a cylinder tube for a hydraulic system, one question appears repeatedly:

Should you choose a Honed Tube or a Skived & Roller Burnished (SRB) Tube?

The short answer is: neither process is universally better.

For high-volume OEM cylinder production where productivity and cost per piece are major priorities, SRB tube often has an advantage because skiving and roller burnishing can achieve the required bore geometry and surface finish efficiently in a combined process. ECOROLL notes that modern skive-burnishing has significantly reduced machining time compared with traditional honing in hydraulic-cylinder tube production.

However, when surface texture, seal lubrication, geometry correction, repairability, or application-specific finishing are more important, a Honed Tube can still be the better engineering choice. Sunnen describes honing as a precision finishing process specifically used to improve both bore geometry and surface finish by removing very small amounts of material.

Which bore surface will work best with your seals, operating conditions, production volume, and dimensional requirements?

First, What Is the Difference Between Honing and SRB?

A Honed Tube is finished internally with abrasive stones that rotate and reciprocate along the bore. The process removes a small amount of material while improving diameter accuracy, cylindricity and surface texture. The resulting surface normally has a recognizable cross-hatch pattern. Sunnen specifically identifies honing as a final finishing operation for obtaining precise bore geometry and surface finish, while modern honing machines synchronize spindle rotation and stroking to maintain a controlled cross-hatch throughout the bore.

A Skived & Roller Burnished Tube uses two different operations.

First, skiving blades cut the bore to the required dimension and form. Roller burnishing then plastically deforms microscopic surface peaks to create a smoother finished surface. ECOROLL explains that skiving primarily establishes dimensional and form accuracy, while roller burnishing directly reduces surface roughness.

The result is two very different surface-generation methods.

Three practical questions matter much more.

1.Is a Smoother Bore Always Better for Seal Life?

No. This is one of the most common misconceptions in hydraulic cylinder design.

An extremely smooth bore may look more precise, but hydraulic seals require an appropriate lubrication film.

Hallite, a hydraulic sealing specialist, warns that a surface that is too smooth may not retain enough lubrication, potentially increasing frictional heat and seal wear. Conversely, a surface that is too rough can damage the sealing edge.

Hallite reports typical Honed Tube surfaces in approximately the 0.1–0.4 μm Ra range and notes that honed surfaces are particularly friendly to mating sealing elements. It also describes skived and roller-burnished tubing as extremely smooth, commonly below 0.1 μm Ra, while cautioning that some rubber sealing elements can be more sensitive to such surfaces.

This does not mean SRB tubes cause seal problems.

It means that Ra alone should never determine your cylinder tube specification.

Trelleborg's recent sealing research goes further. For hydraulic cylinder bores, its recommendations consider not only Ra but also Rz, Rpk, Rvk and Rmr, because these parameters describe peaks, valleys and the material-bearing characteristics of the surface more accurately. Its test-based recommendations distinguish between honed/ground and roller-burnished cylinder bores even when their acceptable Ra ranges overlap.

Practical solution

Before ordering a Honed Tube or SRB tube, confirm:

1. seal material: PTFE, TPU, rubber or another compound;
2. operating pressure and piston velocity;
3. lubricant and hydraulic fluid;
4. required Ra and Rz;
5. where necessary, Rpk, Rvk and Rmr;
6. cylinder manufacturer's sealing recommendations.

Do not specify “mirror finish” simply because smoother sounds better.

The correct surface is the one that supports stable lubrication and seal life.

2.Which Tube Gives Better Cost and Lead Time?

For large-volume hydraulic cylinder production, SRB generally has the stronger productivity argument.

Modern skiving and roller burnishing combines dimensional machining and surface finishing into a highly efficient process. ECOROLL states that the technique was developed specifically for economical hydraulic-cylinder tube production and has significantly reduced processing time compared with honing.

That makes SRB particularly attractive for:

1. construction machinery cylinders,
2. agricultural equipment,
3. lifting systems,
4. material-handling equipment and other repeat OEM applications.

A Honed Tube, however, should not automatically be rejected because its processing time may be longer.

Honing allows extremely controlled bore finishing and geometry correction. Sunnen's tube-honing systems include automatic bore geometry correction and controlled adjustment of stroke, stone feed, spindle speed and cutting pressure.

This flexibility can be valuable for:

1. custom cylinders,
2. smaller production batches,
3. unusual dimensions,
4. demanding geometry specifications and cylinder repair or reconditioning.

Sunnen specifically lists hydraulic-cylinder reconditioning among the applications for its tube-honing systems.

Practical solution

Procurement should therefore compare total production cost, not simply tube price.

For a 10,000-piece repeat order, faster SRB production may provide a meaningful cost advantage.

For 50 customized cylinders requiring additional bore correction, a Honed Tube may reduce downstream machining and engineering risk.

3. What Should Be Written on the Drawing or Purchase Specification?

This is where many hydraulic-cylinder projects go wrong.

A purchase order that only says:

“Honed Tube, Ra ≤ 0.4 μm”

may still leave important performance requirements undefined.

Two surfaces with similar Ra values can have different peak structures, valley depths and lubricant-retention behavior. Trelleborg therefore recommends evaluating additional surface parameters where sealing performance is critical.

A better cylinder-tube specification should consider:

Material + ID tolerance + OD tolerance + wall thickness + straightness + roundness + surface roughness + surface profile + mechanical properties + inspection requirements.

For critical hydraulic applications, the tube specification should also be coordinated with the seal manufacturer's recommendations.

This is much safer than asking a supplier to provide “the smoothest Honed Tube possible.”

So, Honed Tube or SRB Tube: Which Should You Choose?

A useful rule of thumb is:

Choose SRB when productivity, repeatability and high-volume manufacturing efficiency are the main priorities.

Choose a Honed Tube when controlled bore geometry, application-specific surface texture, repairability or seal-friendly cross-hatch characteristics are particularly important.

Most importantly, do not choose based on manufacturing process alone.

The bore is a functional sealing surface. Its job is not to look smooth—it must maintain geometry, retain the correct lubrication film, minimize friction and support reliable seal performance over millions of operating cycles.

That is why experienced hydraulic-cylinder engineers evaluate the tube, seal, fluid and operating condition as one tribological system, rather than treating Ra as an isolated number. Trelleborg similarly emphasizes that sealing-system performance depends on the interaction between the seal, hydraulic fluid and mating surface.
